There is something kind of wild about realizing this is the fourth birthday of Mackenzie’s that I have gotten to celebrate with her. I actually had to sit with that number for a second because it doesn’t feel like it should already be four, even as I have enough pictures, posts, and memories sitting around this blog to prove that it absolutely is.
Welcome to For The Record, my newest and deepest post style. On these we deep dive the music behind the posts. Today’s post is a literal monster of a post but I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.
(Warning: everything below these next two paragraphs is very explicit. You have now been warned.) We’re back in the Let’s Lose Some Sleep post style today. You know what that means: things are about to get steamy in here, as you can see. After a couple of months apart and a lot of thinking and growing on both of our parts, we’re back. I know for me I spent a lot of time figuring out what I wanted. What I needed. If things needed to change, what were they? After talking quite a few times, she had done the same and wanted to know what conclusions I had come to. So we talked through it and, at the end of it, realized that we’re way better together than not.
Sometimes losing your place in something you helped build leaves you trying to separate what belonged to it from what still belongs to you.
SCATTERBRAIN’s BITTER got me thinking about Brian Burkheiser, his account of how his time with I Prevail ended, what he’s creating now and what it means to finally tell your own side of a story. The open gates, darkness and light became my way of bringing all of that into the photo.
You can still be angry. You can even be a little BITTER. Just don’t stop building whatever comes next.
There is something interesting about the idea of Eden because people almost always imagine it from the positive side of the story. We picture paradise before anything happened to it. Everything prior to the fall. Before knowledge complicated its innocence. Before something beautiful became something you could lose. We imagine the gates still open and everything exactly where it belongs. What we don’t spend nearly as much time thinking about is what Eden could look like to someone standing outside of it.
