“Every moment wants to feel brand new
Every moment I’m alone with you
Carry on when it starts to feel this way
Up ahead there is something worth the wait
And you’re miles away from it all but I don’t care”
Mayday Parade – Towards You

There’s something about wandering aimlessly in Second Life that feels different. It’s not like playing World of Warcraft or anything else. There’s no set path, no real objective, just endless places to explore, all waiting to be found. Sometimes, (and very rarely since I’m a platform dweller), I search for something specific; a cozy cafe, a hidden beach, a quiet corner to sit and think. But other times, like tonight, I’m just drifting, letting my feet (or in this case, my “camera”) take me wherever they want.
That’s how I found this small wooden boat floating in the middle of a peaceful sim. No signs, no teleport points, and no obvious reason why it was there. Just existing, waiting. The water stretched out endlessly around it, smooth and glassy, with the faintest ripple catching the light. In the distance amidst the haze, a few scattered lights shined, hinting at a house near the shoreline that I couldn’t quite see. It felt untouched, like I had stumbled into a space between moments, where time didn’t quite move the same way.
I wasn’t looking for anything specific when I found it. But the second I saw it, I knew I had to stay and find a shot that fit what I wanted. There’s something about water in Second Life that I’ve always loved. You probably know that from previous posts and photos, and if you don’t you do now. Maybe it’s how it reacts to light, shifting and shimmering, or maybe it’s how it creates this sense of depth and openness all at once. It reminds me of real life, but at the same time, it feels even more limitless. Like a dream, you can step right into it. This spot, with its lone boat and its quiet, open space, felt like the perfect place to just exist for a little while.
So, I sat. Let the silence settle around me. Let the world slow down.
When I started editing the shot I decided to go back to black and white. It’s funny how much changes when you strip color away. Suddenly, it wasn’t just a boat on the water; it was light and shadow, shape and contrast. The way the boat’s edges stood out against the water, the way the ripples curved in soft grays, the way the sky melted into the horizon. It felt timeless, like an old photograph, like something suspended between past and present.
But more than anything, it felt still. Not lonely. Not empty. Just…still. Like the world had exhaled, and I could hear my own thoughts. I sat there for a while, longer than I meant to. It was just a digital space, just pixels and code, but for that moment, it felt real in a way I can’t quite explain. It was like the universe had given me a little pocket of peace, a place to pause and breathe.
Then I had to decide on what the soundtrack to this post was going to be. After scrolling through songs I have bookmarked to use eventually I arrived at Towards You by Mayday Parade. I thought it fit this moment in a way that felt almost too perfect. Like it was meant to be playing in the background while I sat there on that boat, just relaxing. The song carries this quiet, almost weightless feeling, like drifting without a destination, like time slowing down without stopping.
Looking at the photo in black and white reminded me of how the song strips things down. No distractions, just emotion. The way the light and shadows shape the boat and the way the ripples stretch into the distance are the same way this song makes you feel something, even if you can’t quite put it into words.
I knew it wasn’t just about capturing an image. It was about capturing that feeling of quiet, of solitude, of finding something I didn’t even know I needed. That’s what I love most about Second Life. Not just the places, but the moments. The ones you don’t plan for, the ones that sneak up on you and stay with you long after you log off. I’ve learned to appreciate the moments a lot, not that I didn’t in the past, but even more so now. Those moments. They make everything. Credits for myself can be found below, the sim is private so I won’t share that, apologies.
“I’m still singing because you make me feel less small
You are the wave beneath it all
You lift me when I fall down
As I go, carry hope it won’t be long
We’ll make an ocean of this song
And I’ll sail where the wind blows now
Towards you, towards you”
