I don’t know about you, but there’s something about angels that is interesting to me. Maybe it’s the idea of these powerful celestial beings watching over us, or maybe it’s the thought that even the holiest creatures have struggles. Either way, angels have been a part of our stories for as long as we’ve been telling them. Sometimes as protectors, sometimes as warriors, and sometimes as exiles who dared to question everything. (Here’s looking at you Lucifer.) I’ve never been one to say I believe in a particular spiritual thing, be it God or the like. But I have learned that I trust the universe of all things, 444 baby. (The universe hasn’t let me down yet, except for when I ask for it do bad things then it’s like “Nah.”)
Speaking of angels and defiance, Tommy Vext’s cover of Take Me to Church? Absolutely haunting. You ever hear a song that just hits different? Like, it doesn’t just sound good, it –feels- like something inside you is waking up? That’s exactly what happened when I heard this version of the song. Hozier’s original is already powerful, soulful, aching, full of raw emotion that makes you feel like you’re standing in the rain, staring up at the sky, begging for answers. But Tommy? He takes that pain and turns it into power.
There’s something almost otherworldly about how he delivers every line. His voice is rough but controlled, like someone who’s been through hell and made it out the other side, scarred but standing. Hozier gives us mournful poetry, Tommy gives us fire. His version doesn’t just sound like a song. It sounds like a fight. That’s what makes it so addictive to me. It’s got this energy, like an angel on the edge, wings torn but still refusing to bow. The heavy instrumentals, the deeper, more intense vocals, it all builds into something that feels less like a plea and more like a declaration.
If the original was for the lost, this cover is for the ones who refuse to stay lost. It’s for the ones who have questioned everything they were told to believe but still haven’t given up on something greater. It’s not just about love or faith, it’s about survival. It’s about standing in the fire and walking through it anyway. Knowing that even angels have to fight sometimes. Honestly, isn’t that what makes angels so fascinating? They’re not all just mindless followers of the divine. They feel. They struggle. They choose. Just like us.
