“When you were standing in the wake of devastation
When you were waiting on the edge of the unknown
And with the cataclysm raining down
Insides crying, “Save me now!”
You were there, impossibly alone”
Linkin Park – Iridescent
As Pride Month continues, so does Pride At Home’s Pride Month Color Block Challenge. The challenge invites residents across Second Life to choose one of the six colors of the traditional Pride flag and create a photograph inspired by its meaning. While the concept sounds simple on the surface, spending time with each color has a way of revealing something deeper. When I reached blue, I found myself slowing down.
The previous colors felt easier to define. They carried a certain momentum to them. Blue was different. The more I thought about its meaning of serenity and harmony, the less I found myself thinking about action and the more I found myself thinking about stillness. That thought led me to water. For this photograph, I imagined myself floating with my eyes closed, suspended between sky and water. No destination. No checklist. No expectation that I needed to be somewhere other than where I already was. Just a quiet moment to exist without resistance.
Bringing that vision to life became just as important as the message behind it. For this picture, I kept things intentionally simple, wearing NoFake’s Sagger Trunks along with Izzie’s Wet Body & Face to create the feeling of being fully immersed in the water. Rather than building an elaborate scene, I relied on pure Second Life water and a wash of blue lighting to create the atmosphere I was after. The simplicity of it all felt fitting. Nothing to distract from the moment itself, just the feeling of floating, letting go, and allowing the stillness to speak for itself.
Of all the colors I’ve explored so far, blue has been the quietest. It doesn’t demand attention the way some of the others do. It simply asks us to pause for a moment and consider what we’re still holding onto. Not every burden needs to be carried forever. Not every disappointment deserves permanent space in our lives. Not every difficult chapter needs to remain open.
The older I get, the more I realize how much energy we spend carrying things long after they’ve served their purpose. Regrets. Resentments. Mistakes. Old fears. Words we wish we hadn’t heard. Moments we wish had gone differently. We convince ourselves that holding onto them somehow keeps us prepared, when more often than not they simply weigh us down. That’s one of the reasons Linkin Park’s Iridescent became the soundtrack for this post.
What has always resonated with me about the song is its message of release. It doesn’t ask us to forget where we’ve been or pretend that painful experiences never happened. Instead, it reminds us that we don’t have to carry everything forever. Some things shape us. Some things teach us. Some things leave their mark. But not everything deserves a permanent home within us. As I listened to the song while working on this picture, I kept returning to the same thought. What would it feel like to simply let go? Not to give up. Not to stop caring. Just to stop carrying. I think there’s something meaningful about that idea during Pride Month.
For many people, the journey isn’t only about reaching a destination. It’s also about learning which burdens belong to them and which never did. Some burdens arrive quietly. Old fears. Past hurts. Expectations placed upon us by others. The weight of experiences that continue to occupy space long after they’ve ended. There is freedom in releasing those things.
Pride At Home has spent years creating opportunities for residents across Second Life to come together, celebrate, support LGBTQIA+ causes, and share their stories. Through events, fundraising, and community initiatives, they continue to create spaces where people can connect and express themselves in meaningful ways. Challenges like this remind me that creativity can be more than self-expression. Sometimes it becomes reflection too.
Maybe that’s what blue ultimately represents for me. Not escape. Not forgetting. Not pretending everything is perfect. Just the willingness to loosen your grip on things that no longer need to be carried. To trust the water. To trust yourself. And for a little while, simply float. Happy Pride Month. Pride At Home Presents : Pride Month Color Block Challenge
Celebrate Pride by bringing the colors of the rainbow to life!
Create an original “color block” photograph centered around ONE of the six classic rainbow colors:
Red • Orange • Yellow • Green • Blue • Violet
Your chosen color should dominate the entire image – clothing, makeup, props, lighting, background, accessories, styling, everything!
Make your color the star of the shot, well, as well as you, obviously!
Your photo must be:
– Original
– Taken by you
– Focused on one single rainbow color
That’s it. Simple, bold, creative.
Pose alone, collaborate with friends, or have fun with a group. Whether your style is glamorous, dramatic, minimal, surreal, cozy, futuristic, or chaotic – we want to see YOUR vision.
Selected submissions will be displayed in the in-world Art Gallery on the Pride At Home sim throughout June, and may also be featured across our social media and future Pride At Home projects.
How to Submit? Post your photo on the social platform of your choice and tag us, or share it directly in the Pride At Home server.
Can’t Pick a Color? Tell us and we’ll choose one for you.
Most importantly:
Have fun with it, get creative, and make your color shine.
We can’t wait to see what you create!
“And in a burst of light that blinded every angel
As if the sky had blown the heavens into stars
You felt the gravity of tempered grace
Falling into empty space
No one there to catch you in their arms”
