“Who knows what’ll happen, ain’t that always kinda magic
When you don’t know who’s holding the cards
Could be a wish I never knew ya or permanently tattoo ya
Only the moon knows what’s in the stars”
Kelsea Ballerini – HEARTFIRST
After spending time with red and orange, I thought I had a pretty good idea where the Pride At Home Color Block Challenge was going to take me. Then yellow showed up and boy was it more challenging than I expected.
Of all the colors in the Pride flag, yellow might be the one I underestimated the most. On the surface it seems simple. It represents sunlight. Easy enough, right? But the longer I sat with it, the more I realized that sunlight isn’t really the point. It’s what happens when we step into it that matters. In the traditional Pride flag, yellow represents sunlight, warmth, and visibility. It’s a color that refuses to go unnoticed. It doesn’t hide in the background or apologize for taking up space. It simply exists, bright and impossible to ignore. Maybe that’s why yellow ended up resonating with me more than I expected.
One of the things I’ve enjoyed most about the Pride At Home Color Block Challenge is how each color has encouraged a different kind of reflection. This challenge started with red and life. Orange brought healing. Yellow feels like the next step in that journey. It’s the moment where you stop looking inward and start stepping forward. The moment where healing gives way to confidence and possibility.
That’s one of the reasons I kept coming back to HEARTFIRST by Kelsea Ballerini while putting this post together. What stood out to me wasn’t just the openness in the song. It was the optimism. The willingness to embrace uncertainty instead of running from it. HEARTFIRST never promises that everything will work out perfectly. Instead, it leans into the idea that some of life’s best moments happen when we stop trying to control every outcome and simply allow ourselves to experience them.
That felt surprisingly connected to yellow for me. Sunlight isn’t just about being seen. It’s about possibility. It’s the feeling that something good could be waiting around the corner. It’s trusting yourself enough to take the next step even when you don’t know exactly where it leads.
For the photo itself, I wanted to lean into the color rather than treat yellow as an accent. Salt & Pepper’s Switch swim trunks and Legal Insanity’s Neo shoulder shirt provided exactly the bright, sun-soaked look I had in mind, while Darkfold’s Posh Pool Airbed and The Bearded Guy’s Lemon Dreams Backdrop helped create a scene that felt warm, playful, and impossible to overlook.
Yellow isn’t a color I wear often (shocking since I’m a Lakers fan), which made this challenge even more fun. Red felt natural. Orange felt familiar. Yellow pushed me outside my comfort zone, which is probably fitting given what the color ended up meaning to me. The brighter everything became, the more I found myself leaning into it rather than pulling back. When I started putting everything together, I kept coming back to the same idea: if yellow is about sunlight, then this photograph shouldn’t whisper. It should shine. 🍋
That’s one of the reasons Pride continues to matter. Not because everyone has the same story, but because everyone deserves the opportunity to live their story openly and without fear. To know they belong exactly as they are. To know there’s room for them in the light. For me, that’s what yellow means. It’s not just sunlight. It’s confidence. It’s possibility. It’s the willingness to step forward even when the future isn’t completely written yet. It’s trusting that who you are is enough.
Red reminded me that life itself is worth celebrating. Orange reminded me that healing is always possible. Yellow genuinely feels like the moment after both of those things, when you finally step back into the world carrying what you’ve learned. Not hiding, shrinking, or waiting for permission. Just stepping forward exactly as you are and seeing where the road leads next.
I’ll be honest too, I couldn’t decide on a song for a while that’s why it took so much longer. I went back and forth over numerous options. The soundtrack for this post became HEARTFIRST because that’s exactly what it captures. The courage to embrace possibility. The willingness to trust yourself. The freedom that comes from leading with your heart instead of your fears. That’s what yellow means to me. Not just sunlight, but the confidence to step into it. But it can’t feel your hands on my hips right now
It may not be next year, what I need
Then again, maybe it might be”
