Winter Is Upon Us

I had the itch to shoot something else after my last post and here we are. If you’ve been around here for any amount of time, you know usually I have a song idea to put with the photo and what I write. Well, this time is one of those few times where I’m not sure what song I want yet so I’ll just write.

It just so happens that not long after setting up this shot we got our first snowfall here in the real world. It was well ahead of last year’s first snow so I fear this winter is going to be filled with a ton of it. I am not a fan of the snow or the cold which is really unfortunate considering I live in a northern state. At least it’ll be warmer with the new winter gear that I’ve picked up in the last few months.

While I was on my hiatus from blogging I had one hell of a work accident (it is literally most of why I took a break because I couldn’t really type). I’ll spare everyone the images but do my best to explain. I work in a machining spindle manufacturing shop. We repair, build, manufacture, and test machine spindles for all types of industries. They come in all shapes and sizes and back in June I happened to be working on one of our larger models. At the time we had tools to test sensors built into them and for whatever reason they had a gigantic hole in the middle of them. Now you might be thinking why is that a big deal, well the hole was big enough for a finger to fit into…

What makes them particularly dangerous is that these spindles have an HSK gripper in them. When it kicks out to let the tool go, 6 metal gripper fingers contract together to release it. You can put two and two together and see how that could be unsafe around a finger. They use a hydraulic system to make the clamping system work. This model uses 120 bar of hydraulic pressure to function. That’s 1740 pounds per square inch.

You can imagine what that kind of pressure will do to a fingertip if it happens to be there when that gripper comes forward to release the tool. You are correct if you guessed it’s basically like a knife through butter. I found that out the fun way, experience. It pretty much took my right index finger and all but removed the fingertip. Thankfully, with some quick thinking and getting to the emergency room fast, nothing was lost.

It didn’t end up with surgery, but it was, and still is a long and annoying recovery process. There was a lot of time letting it heal (which took way longer than expected) and physical therapy to get things as normal as possible. It’s still a work in progress but one thing I did learn is that gloves aren’t an option anymore, heated gloves are even better. Even with it healing up the blood flow will never be like it was before so it’s more susceptible to cold and frostbite. So with our first snow, I was reminded that this lovely season is going to be a whole different ballgame compared to the previous years. I’ll be staying extra warm this year because I have no choice but to listen.
