Just A Scar Somewhere Down Inside Of Me, Something I Can Not Repair

“But I’m tired, I will always be afraid
Of the damage I’ve received
Broken promises they made
And how blindly I believed (This is all I know)”

Linkin Park – Lost

Linkin Park, safe to say you most likely know who they are, and if you don’t you will by the end of this post. They were, are, a band that spans across different genres but we’ll throw them in the broad category of Rock for the sake of clarity. They are more than just a rock band; if you’ve heard them, you already know. They’re coming up on the 20th anniversary of their second album Meteora in April and have decided to do what they did with their first album. Hybrid Theory 20 was a four-disc box set that had the original album, live tracks, b-sides, demos, and more, and any Linkin Park fan was all in on that. With Meteora coming up on its anniversary we’ve gotten our first taste of something “new” from Linkin Park in quite some time. This demo has floated around before but never have I heard it. So I was thrilled to hear something that brought Chester back to us in a sense. Lost is a track that does not disappoint and I’m glad it got to see the light of day. I know I stand with LP fans across the globe in supporting the band and missing Chester.

The year 2017 was a particularly difficult one when it came to my musical influences as I’m sure many of my fellow music fans. In the span of a couple of months, we lost both Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington to suicide. Losing any life to suicide is difficult, we on the outside wonder why and how, what we could have done, and what we didn’t see. That mostly applies to people we personally know and interact with. Now with celebrities and people who have such a broad impact as Chris and Chester, we still do those things, but we know there’s not much we could do. What we do is mourn, we celebrate their lives, we support the things they and their families love, and we remember all of the good things they’ve brought to our lives through their music or acts.

Most everyone believes we lost Chester because Chris was gone, and me being the kind of fan I am wholeheartedly agree with that. Chester looked at Chris as a role model, and when Chris was gone, the demons and pain Chester had fought for so long ended up winning. It doesn’t make Chester weak or wrong, it makes him just like the rest of us. You never know what battles someone is fighting, fame and money don’t change the pain, they might make it seem easier, but in truth, it’s not. Everyone thought Robin Williams was happy and great, and we were wrong. Chris from all perspectives seemed okay too, hell he had just performed earlier the night he took his life. Chester performed “Hallelujah” at Chris’s funeral in eulogy. You knew he was hurt and sad, but we didn’t know how much, until on Chris’s birthday in July, we lost Chester too.

On October 27, 2017, the remaining members of Linkin Park as well as friends across the artist community put on a show to celebrate Chester Bennington. Because you can only fit so many people in the Hollywood Bowl, they broadcast it worldwide for everyone to see because they knew what Chester meant to the fans, and what the fans meant to Chester. I remember watching it live and bawling my eyes out, both out of sadness and appreciation. I could never take away what Chester dealt with and we’ll never know all of it, but he was and remains a huge influence on my musical journey and life. It was only natural that when I started DJing in SecondLife during our lovely lockdown period for Covid that a set wrapped around Chester had to be done. I knew it wasn’t going to be everyone’s thing but thankfully I had good people supporting me in doing it, and for three hours that night we also celebrated Chester together. It was and remains my favorite set of all time that I did. From the building to the time putting it together the way I wanted it, to seeing people from literally all over the world standing there with us. If you missed it, you can listen below, it’s a long one but I hope you enjoy it if you do.

DJ Lucky – For Chester 07.18.2020 Live @ Burrow

I somewhat pulled the scene from the video for Numb albeit toned down a bit because there’s no way I’m talented enough to recreate the entire thing. I wanted to do something Linkin Park though given the time of the release of Lost lining up with my creativity. Thankfully I had some new creation to showcase at the same time, two for one right? [MAGNIFICENT] is back at this month’s round of The Mens Dept with the LOKI Hair. It’s another awesome hair to go along with THOR and RAGNAR, I’m thrilled to see more male hair coming out and have encouraged the big guy to keep making them. Show him I’m right by stopping over at The Mens Dept to demo and hopefully purchase it for yourself. Credits for everything else can be found below. Thanks for bearing with a very media-heavy post, I appreciate it.

Living behind my own illusion
Lost all my dignity
Living inside my own confusion”
