I know it’s been a minute since I last posted, and honestly, I feel bad about it. Winter has a way of slowing me down, not just physically but creatively, too. The cold, the gray skies, and the general lack of sunlight make it hard to feel inspired. I’ve been in full-on hibernation mode, and I guess my motivation got buried under all the blankets I’ve been wrapped up in.
Every time I sat down to write, I either got distracted or just didn’t have the words. But I don’t want to let the whole season pass by without checking in, so here I am, shaking off the winter blues and trying something different.
With Valentine’s Day (yes I know it’s today), I started thinking about how I wanted to capture the day. Every year, I’m usually all about the classic reds, pinks, and hearts everywhere. There might even be one of those that you just haven’t seen. But this time, for this post, I’m switching things up. Instead of leaning into all the traditional bright colors, I’m going with something totally different; black-and-white photography.
There’s something about black-and-white that just feels raw and real to me. Love isn’t always bright and shiny; sometimes, it’s in the quiet moments, the small details, the contrast between light and dark. It’s the way someone looks at you when they think you’re not paying attention, the way hands find each other without thinking, like a reflex, a silent “I’m here.” It’s in the comfort of just being near someone, sitting in peaceful silence, no grand gestures needed.
Love isn’t just about the big, sweeping moments we see in movies. It’s also in the everyday things. It’s in the way someone pulls the blanket up over you when you fall asleep on the couch. It’s in the way they remember how you like your coffee or send you a random text just to say they’re thinking about you. It’s the sleepy good mornings, the deep conversations in the car, the way laughter lingers even after the joke has faded.
Love is in the spaces between words, in the silence that doesn’t feel awkward, in the feeling of home that has nothing to do with a place. It’s the kind of love that doesn’t need a spotlight because it shines just fine on its own. Stripping away the colors lets you focus on those emotions. When you take away the distractions of reds and pinks, you start to see love in its purest form; just light and shadow, connection and feeling. That’s what I want to capture a lot more of this year.
So that’s the plan, kind of. I’ll be experimenting more than ever, black-and-white, more of the story, whatever feels like fun to do. I’m excited to see where it all takes me and how it turns out. There are still going to be the normal posts as well so if you’ve been around for a while you can expect plenty of the usual as well.
