“They said I’m going nowhere, tried to count me out
Took those sticks and stones, showed ’em I could build a house
They tell me that I’m crazy, but I’ll never let ’em change me
‘Til they cover me in daisies, daisies, daisies”
Katy Perry – Daisies

I know it’s still not a couple’s post. Trust me that’s coming but you gotta mix it up and change things up from time to time and like I said last post you’ve had a steady dose of couply goodness. I’m spinning back to a “Break The Glass” vibe albeit in a far different form and with a completely different subject. I roped Mackenzie into doing this one instead of using the alt because it’s just more fun. I still wanted to keep it reasonably safe to post so we strategically placed the daises to make that happen. I will say shooting this one was probably the trickiest one I’ve done in a while. Finding the angle and look that I had in my head was a challenge that I am not even sure I got right. But we learn and grow with each one, I’ll keep looking for those angles, the ideas, and whatever else I need.
The “Break The Glass” post was written way back in 2018 and to this day it’s still one of my favorites. I could roll with the darker, edgy feel that it had and still does now. It really helped me push through a point when I wasn’t sure I was even good at any of the stuff I was doing. This is obviously not that. I’m reasonably comfortable with what I do now and if you’ve come to know me I’m even more confident in speaking my mind. Some of you like that, you know who you are, and we’ve talked about that. Some of you may not and that’s fine too. Everyone can choose to read or not.
Some of this might be rehashing that post in a sense, but I feel like I need to say it again. I’ve noticed on most of my socials (trust me I use like all of them and see what people are saying) that people hate that blogging feels like they don’t get a chance because of the number of views or the followers you have to have. I get it, I’m right there with all of you who’ve said it. It’s a tough race to get into unless you can absolutely blow things out of the water immediately, or you know someone who’s willing to take that chance on you. You’re going to get frustrated, you’re going to have photos that you think are fantastic that don’t do as well as you’d hoped. You’ll have photos that you think are just okay that end up blowing up, trust me, I’ve been there. The ones I think are killer and will be a hit flop, and the ones I’m “meh” about end up exceeding even my highest expectations.
I have friends who ask me how they can improve or what I think they could do better and let’s be honest I’m no expert, nor do I think I’m even at a level where I’m capable of giving the right feedback. But I have always and will always give feedback if it’s asked for, nothing I know or do or even try to is a secret. There is no gatekeeping here in Luckytown. If I can teach you something or provide an ear or an eye to something to maybe show you a perspective you don’t see or have, I will. Recently I’ve done that a bit and I’ve seen those people excel with just the smallest of suggestions and that is the best part of it.
I feel the need to just quote the next portion of that 2018 post because it’s as true as ever today and maybe, just maybe, it’s what someone needs to hear.
“I have a simple set of rules for my photos, they are as follows:
- Are -YOU- happy with what you did?
- Is the reaction from others what you hoped it would be?
- If the reaction isn’t what you thought it would be, then see #1 and forget about
Yes. I know. You should care how other people view your work. I’m not saying to not care at all. That’s almost impossible and you don’t grow or improve by ignoring it all. What I mean is you can’t let the fact that you got 45 favorites vs the “magic number” in your head drag you down. You and your work are more than that number, no matter what anyone else claims or thinks. Keep working at it, push yourself. You can do this.
Now I also know that part of some sponsorships/partnerships/whatever you prefer to call them requires X number of favorites or views. I understand as a Brand owner/creator that ideally you want your bloggers to attract views. I will not nor do I hold that against anyone. You have to do what you feel you need to do. As a blogger though, at least to this blogger, you have to enjoy your work, and if you don’t none of the other stuff matters in the least bit. If I hate the photos I’m doing and I’m just doing them to meet a quota or fulfill an obligation then why am I doing it? I’ve done it and the past and it drove me away from this all together.”
It’s still the same deal, the metrics are always going to get in the way somehow, someway, somewhere. That doesn’t mean you’re not good enough to do it or can’t do it. It just means you have to say fuck the metrics and do it anyway. Why? Because -you- like what you are doing, and for no other reason than that. The work you do that you truly care about shows and believe me when I say people can tell if you really wanted to do that photo or post compared to the one you did because you literally had to do it. Learn, grow, and never stop creating if you love doing it. Don’t let silly numbers stop you, you’re doing this for you.
“Told them your dreams, and they all started laughing
I guess you’re out of your mind ’til it actually happens”
