II. The Moment Will Come

The sound of a twig snapping beneath a heavy boot startled the small animals roaming beneath the foliage growing from the forest floor. A brown Capuchin monkey leaped up in the tree and caught his attention briefly. It was unexpected as he had not noticed the small creature lurking just to his right. Slowly he turned his head back in the direction of his objective, a soft sigh slipping out from between his lips. “Now to sit and wait, the moment will come..”

“Patience, it’s just something that you have to get used to in this line of work. When your mission is to go out and hunt down someone it can take days, months, even years. Sure you have those times where you can find them by chance, but more often then not it takes a lot of work. It is not something that I have always been capable of doing. I’ve trained for years to reach this point. Multiple tours of duty in places I can’t even name, most do to the classified nature of my job.”

The mysterious soldier crouched down by a tree, taking time to rest his legs while keeping an eye towards his targeted location. He could see the movement of shadows in the compound, but had yet to identify if his target was present or not. The thought of just charging in had come to him, but the risk was too great. Were there children inside? How many of the guards are armed? Is my target even here? The cons heavily outweighed the pros for this moment.

“Six hours. Still no sign of them,” he said quietly to himself. “If they’re planning to show up here it should be today.” All of the intel, everything, it pointed to today hadn’t it? As he questioned this in his head, he heard the faint sound of an engine and what he thought to be tires on the dirt road. “It has to be them, not many venture this far into the jungle, at least not for any good reason.” The soldier crouched down and watched intently as a green humvee came into view. He couldn’t get a good count of how many were in the vehicle from this distance. He crept closer to the compound entry, carefully watching each step to avoid making any unnecessary noise. The last thing he needed now was to draw attention from any guards that could be watching the trees.

He stopped at the next large tree. It was approximately 300 meters away, well within the range of his Mk17. Slowly he raised the barrel of the gun up, aiming it at the humvee. As it drew closer he carefully followed it, not wanting to miss any opportunity should he see his target. The vehicle rolled to a stop at the gates, a man in the rear seat. Long black hair, full beard, and a scar down the right side of his face. “It’s time. I’m only going to get one clean chance at this shot.” He took in one final deep breath, slowly exhaling it through his nose before his finger touched the trigger. “I’ve got you this time asshole.” His finger pulled back on the trigger as the target began to exit the vehicle.

Then a noise behind him, the soldier’s head snapped around and…

Something big might just be brewing around Mask and Mien. Ideas bouncing from one person to the other, and even others yet to be known. The question for now is, what happened to our soldier. Did he hit his mark? Did someone sneak up on him? That my friends is a question that will be answered, very soon. All in due time.
