Traditionally, green represents nature on the Pride flag. At first glance, that seems pretty straightforward. Nature surrounds us every day. Trees, flowers, forests, gardens, and everything else that grows around us. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that green isn’t really about nature itself. It’s about what nature teaches us. Growth.
After spending time with red and orange, I thought I had a pretty good idea where the Pride At Home Color Block Challenge was going to take me. Then yellow showed up and boy was it more challenging than I expected.
For orange, I chose A Symptom of Being Human by Shinedown as my soundtrack. The more I thought about it, the more it felt like the perfect song for this color. Within the traditional Pride flag (I know it’s been updated but for the challenge the colors are the colors), orange represents healing. Not celebration, not visibility, healing. While that may not be the first thing people think of when Pride Month comes around, it’s a powerful part of what Pride represents.
I chose red. The more I worked on this, the more it just felt right for where my head was at creatively. Red isn’t a subtle color. It carries emotion loudly whether it wants to or not. Love, anger, passion, vulnerability, confidence, exhaustion, survival. It can feel warm one second and overwhelming the next.
