Will you come running when I scream your name?
When the wolves are out hunting and they’re coming for me
Tell me, do I need to be my own hero?
Will you come running? I need to know
An army of two, or am I all alone?
Tell me, do I need to be my own hero?
Andy Grammer – My Own Hero

My Own Hero

First and foremost the song is not one of those that I’d use to describe a current situation of my own. I just liked it and it gave me the idea to finally get a shot done after slacking off for a week or so. Oddly enough I had an Andy Grammer song lined up for a post that it still sitting as a draft because I haven’t gotten to it yet. Maybe it’ll show up soon, even if I do hate using the same artist too close together. One of those unspoken rules of mine that I try my best to stick to. But I suppose all rules are made to be broken at one point or another right? Soon TM.

I liked the idea of this song and it really kind of came to me late at night a couple of nights ago. So much so that I opened up a Google document on my phone and jotted the idea down so I wouldn’t forget. I was in a rough patch of sleep for a couple of nights there, better safe than sorry. The line that goes “An army of two, or am I all alone? Tell me, do I need to be my own hero?” really kind of locked it in for me. I think we’ve all had those moments where we weren’t sure if someone had our back on something. Sometimes a relationship, a job, or just life in general. It’s always a comforting thought to know that no matter what’s in front of you that you’ve got someone behind you. Whether you fail or succeed they are there. Unquestionably.

There have been plenty of times in my life where I might have felt like it was me against the world. I know in reality I wasn’t alone or doing it by myself, I had people supporting me, in some very dark times especially. But the thing is in times like that you can be your own worst enemy. The people are there but in your head you don’t think that. You look at whatever you may be facing and in your mind it’s “me against it all, by myself” when that’s normally not the case. It’s easy to sit and say it’s that way now because those clouds are gone for me. But to those who are dealing with shit, and let’s be real we’re all dealing with some type of shit every single day, in one way or another, it can seem like no one has your back.

You fight your battles, in whatever ways that you choose to. I’m never going to be one to tell someone how they should handle their own demons. We all do things differently and truth be told, not all of them work out the way you want. But sometimes you have to let someone go through it their way and then hope they understand why “X” wasn’t the solution to “Y.” I have some people very close to me in RL who only seem to learn the hard way. I wish it wasn’t the case because I can see it, and I can say it to them, but words only get so far. Eventually they’ll learn it on their own and hopefully then that will make sense to them.

My point is we all handle our shit in a multitude of ways, sometimes we forget that when someone we know is dealing with problems in their lives. We try to tell them how we would do it, and that’s kind of us to do, but we’re not them and they are not us. The best thing to do is be the other person in that “army of two.” You don’t realize the kind of power you have, telling someone you’re there for them, no questions asked, no matter what, you have their back. It’s a force and an underestimated one at that. Try it sometime, you might be surprised how much of a difference that small thing can make.

Now I’ve done a really good job of talking about many things that aren’t directly Second Life here, more often than not at least. My photos are always Second Life but if you’ve followed this blog for any length of time since my return to it, you know I write what I feel, it’s just how I work best. That being said I do need to touch on a few of the things involved in the shot I ended up with. Firstly, the most obvious and most used brand in the post Skye Studios. I won’t even try to elaborate on how much I use Alex Bader’s creations in my everyday SL, be it at home or in my photos. It’s almost a given that if I need some landscaping Skye is my go to. If you hadn’t noticed either, he just recently released a new Pebble Beach and updated the Waterfalls to cut the particle water out and replace it with a very well done mesh water. I highly recommend looking into both of those as well as the rest of a wide range of landscaping options.

Next is the “not scene” related items. This past week I found myself a bit disappointed. Not in life or my Second Life really, but in what I’ve seen coming out for us guys in SL. Before I get further into this let me say I respect creators making what they feel suits them creatively. That’s important and I get it from the perspective of I like to write what I write, same as they like to make what they like to make. The issue I had really is a simple one on the surface. Creators, I love you, I do, and if you know me and I buy your brand you know I’m loyal to a brand that puts out quality. Especially when it comes to clothing because we do not get anywhere near the amount that out female counterparts do.

So what did I see this week. Most guys, at least the ones that I know look forward to the few monthly events that we get. Those being The Mens Dept, Men Only Monthly, Man Cave, The Men Jail, and Hipster Men’s Event. Now each one varies obviously from one another but their primary aim is Men’s items. So this week saw the new round of TMD start (June 5 – June 30), which is always nice, as it’s the oldest Men’s event as far as I can recall. I remember when it started out as a purely Men only event, over time it’s grown slightly less male focused, which while a little disappointing (sorry again ladies but you get plenty), I deal with because it still has more male stuff than not.

Where does my issue really come in though? Let’s get to that right here. I’m looking at the calendar now and it says it’s June. Now I know in some parts of the world Summer is out and the other seasons are coming in. I understand that. But in my part of the world Summer is upon us and that means summer clothing. Goodbye sweaters, sweatshirts, many layers, hats, gloves, all that lovely cold weather gear. I was a little dismayed to see the amount of long sleeves, heavier jackets, and if you can believe this, sweaters, in June. Like I said I get you have to create what you feel fulfills your creative desires. I just wish one or two (maybe more but hey I’m not going to beg) would take a chance on making things for the men to give us some (more) high quality options.

I’m not shy about saying I love Deadwool. Do you know why I love Deadwool. Because it’s not a treadmill of products, the products we -do- get are always high quality and that’s why we go back to Deadwool every time there is something new. (For example the new Chukka Boots @ Equal10 this month.) Masa Plympton gets it. There are others that I go to regularly but Deadwool is known grid wide for the guys so it’s my best example. Recently I know Mossu did the Brian Shirt for Man Cave (you can still get it until June 11th there) and I demoed it and instantly bought the fatpack for it. It was that good that I wasn’t even considering buying just one. Those are the kinds of things I want more of. The thing that makes me go no I need all of them. I sincerely hope you continue to do more along those lines for us Akira! ❤

This is what I mean. If you put in the time to make something nice for us, we’ll come back. You’ll have our business for as long as you make quality items. Yes we’re a smaller population than the ladies are, that’s indisputable. We’ll never be the -one- thing that drives a profit margin but I can promise you that we will stick with you if you stick with us. That’s not just me speaking either. I’ve got a fair amount of male friends who say the same thing. Show us we’re on your radar and we’ll reciprocate that. Hell even some of the ladies I know agree with that. What I’m getting at is if you’re a designer out there and you’re open to taking a chance on making something for us, please do it. Put a Facebook post out there, put a Plurk out, anything to poll us on ideas for something we’d like that you’d want to make.

I’d bet you get a good response and when it comes along we’ll support your effort. So I don’t know, outside of our usual male creators, wouldn’t it be awesome to see say Blueberry, Tres Blah, or Pixicat, just to name a few, make something amazing for the guys? Girls feel free to chime in on this if you agree and any designers out there, if you make it and it’s good, trust me we’ll show up. Take a chance on us, we’re a rather untapped market in a lot of ways. I know I’d support it.

Alright finally putting this outfit together was actually pretty simple once I found a couple of things. It started with the Melo jacket from Native Urban. I already owned the black version of it but that was too dark for what I was doing. So I went back and picked up the green version of it. It comes with hoodie to wear underneath it was well if you want to. The hoodie has a hud that allows you to change it to a multitude of different colors to fit what you’re trying to accomplish. For this I chose not to since it’s June ya know.

To pull the rest of it together was a newer brand for me. Both my jeans and boots are from .etiquette. and while yes I did demo them first, it was a quick sell. I ended up fatpacking both because they were worth it. Notice the trend, if it’s good I’m fatpacking it because quality over quantity. The fatpack for the jeans gives you 9 color options and the boots have 5 different options. The Hugo jeans and boots are both really well made and are along the lines of something Aria had talked about the other night. More things that have the wrinkles in certain places to make them look real, the way the boot cut ones tuck into the boots and small pieces that give that real feeling. Small additions to clothing pieces are a nice bonus, they can be something that can be hidden on a hud even. Sunglasses hanging off a pocket, a wallet, keys, maybe a pocketwatch, the options are endless really. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on what .etiquette. does next.

I finished the look off with the Silenthill tattoo from THIS IS WRONG because it gave me a the dirty running from wolves/fire look that I wanted. They are a newer place to me though it would seem they’ve been around for a while based on everything they have. I’m glad to have stumbled upon them and look forward to whatever they do next (I have a feeling it’s all going to be really cool, just saying). Stealthic has been the brand I’ve been wearing since I divorced from my former dark black hair. I needed a change and their browns pack really fit what I was looking for. I’m usually always wearing their Baron hair but for this one I went with Haunting instead. I’ve liked the styles and versatility that the styling huds for them bring to our hair. I’m not sure if any other hair brand for guys does it but it’s a nice little addition. I’m also a big fan of having a tinting hud, it allows me to make my hair color basically exactly what I want. Quality and options. Words of the day friends.

If you’re a creator who has an interest in giving the men a shot in terms of creating something for us, please poll us somewhere on what we’d like to see. We need you and if you take the chance on us and are sincere, have an open dialogue on things, I can promise you we’ll be a loyal customer base for you and your brand. I know it’s a lot to ask but I’m hoping maybe if one takes a chance and it works out that other’s might follow them and do it as well. Thanks for reading this long ass post and I hope that you learned from both aspects of it.

Is our future bright now?
Tell me is the dark seeping in
Are we alright now,
Or are we barely breathing again?
Is it our time now, right now,
Or is it just me in the end?
